A MEZZANINE, AN ARTIST STUDIO AND A LIVING SPACE
This project arose from the owners’ desire, a couple of visual artists, to fit out these three above-mentioned areas within their Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie duplex. The addition of a mezzanine allowed them to maximize their living space and enjoy generous amounts of sunshine. This new structure, embedded between the roof and the second floor, divides the interior areas, creating a public section at the front and a private one at the rear. The technical spaces are squashed below the mezzanine and become a transition point between the studio and the kitchen.
The signature, simple yet complex of this project involved optimal use of every centimeter. To achieve that result, we designed and custom-made the furniture in plywood. The staircase, the shower room, the kitchen, the storage modules on wheels as well as the adjustable bookshelves are unified thanks to this simple and affordable material. The floor is covered with epoxy for easier clean-up and greater homogeneity. The little mezzanine includes one bedroom and a reading room which looks on the rooftop gardens.
